Gymzilla Strongman Qualifiers

Quezon City’s renowned strength gym, Gymzilla, played host to a spectacular display of strength and determination as I had the incredible honor of hosting and MCing this PH Strongest Man Qualifying event. Over 20 athletes, representing various weight classes, dedicated themselves to the pursuit of securing a spot at Nationals. Stepping into the gym, one couldn’t help but feel the electric atmosphere of anticipation and excitement that permeated the air. Faces new and old greet me with their game faces and I can’t help but get hyped for them being a competitor myself. I was a bit jelly that I wouldn’t take part in it.

Stepping into the gym, one couldn’t help but feel the electric atmosphere of anticipation and excitement that permeated the air. Guided by the expertise of Coach Priest Villanueva, we went through the event’s technical briefing on the do’s and don’ts for each event. Each challenge was meticulously designed to test the limits of the competitors, ranging from the strategic and very technical Circus Dumbbell Max where competitors can choose their own attempts and play mind-games with each other to a big test of mental fortitude from the very heavy yoke walk and farmers walk moving medley.

The herculean plate loaded Car Deadlifts which you don’t see very often made me happy as I got the chance to feel it as well after the event. The Dinnie Stone Simulator holds for time, complete with ring handles to imitate the legendary Scottish Manhood Stone lift, added an extra layer of intensity and test of will on how bad you want it. It was a painful event not for the weak of heart where competitors take their time and lift the handles up and hold it till their calluses rip or their brain says no more to the painful demands of the weight. The iconic atlas stone lifts always come last in any strongman event and it’s such a big test of raw power and cannot get any more badass than that having gas left in the tank after 4 big events are harsh and any athlete who gets to finish all 5 gets my respect.

What truly made this event remarkable was the emergence of new stars who managed to shock even the old guards with their exceptional performances. Among them, an under-90 kg first-time competitor, Joe Pring, showcased astounding potential winning his weight class with great athleticism and having the brute strength to back it up. Placing second in the under-70 kg weight class all the way from Baguio City was CJ Black, an experienced arm wrestler who had demonstrated incredible endurance by competing in arm wrestling just a day before the strongman event what a quick, on your feet quality having had no experiences prior in handling strongman implements.

CJ Black (u70kg), First time competitor, 2nd place

(Joe Pring First Time Competitor, First Place u90kg Class)

(Sean O’ Connor 105kg class 1st place)

A significant highlight was the rise of a new contender in the under-105 kg category, Sean O’Connor, who accomplished a remarkable feat by finishing all events and taking a win against Janlo Labayen, a feat not anyone can boast of. The birth of this new contender added an exciting twist to the competition, leaving us eagerly anticipating how the “good doctor” will prepare for Philippine Strongest Man to mend the chip in his armor.

Aside from the new ones I went absolutely crazy seeing under 80 competitor Jr Orencio’s return to the stage in his best form yet bagging his first podium finish. He is one of the most technical strongmen out there and I always look up to what he’s doing in training form wise. I relate to the slow start and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for his continued strongman journey.

(Gabriel “The Aztec” Orencio 3rd place u80kg)

In a true testament to Gymzilla’s dedication to strength sports, Shane Cue, the gym’s owner, made a triumphant debut by securing first place in his inaugural event, earning a coveted spot in the Open category. Following closely behind was powerlifter Pao “Paozilla” Alcober, who, in only his second showing, demonstrated immense potential. I can’t wait to witness the development of these formidable competitors and anticipate a thrilling performance from them in December.

Shane Cue’s victory in the PH Strongest Man Qualifying event not only confirmed Gymzilla’s dedication to strength sports, but also highlighted the great talent housed inside its doors. His extraordinary performance represented the essence of Gymzilla’s fundamental concept – a determination to pushing the frontiers of human strength and potential, providing an inspiring example for both his fellow athletes and the whole strength sports community.
