On July 14th 2024, Philippine Powerlifting (PHPL) hosted its first ever Deadlift Only competition, a celebration of raw strength, dedication, and the relentless pursuit of personal bests. This lifting competition, as the name suggests, features only one core lift: the deadlift.

The Deadlift Only competition was divided into weight classes and categories. Each lifter had three attempts to achieve their maximum lift, with the best lift from each athlete being recorded for final rankings.

Female Division Highlights

Danica Dawn Nova (Novice and Open)
Danica Dawn Nova dominated both the novice and open categories in the Under 48 kg class, lifting an impressive 125 kg. Her performance was a testament to her strength and skill, earning her the title of best lifter in both divisions.

Maria Therese Chua (Juniors)
Maria Therese Chua’s performance in the juniors division was outstanding. Competing in the Under 67.5 kg category, she lifted 125 kg, showcasing her potential as a future star in powerlifting.

Angelica Balangue (Masters 1)
In the masters 1 division, Angelica Balangue excelled with a lift of 80 kg in the Under 56 kg class. Her consistent performance across categories highlighted her experience and dedication to the sport.

Patricia Santos (Masters 2)

Patricia Santos emerged victorious in the masters 2 division for the Under 75 kg class, lifting 115 kg. Her achievement underscored her determination and skill, making her a standout lifter in her category.

Best Lifter Highlights

Abraham Encluna (Novice and Juniors)
Abraham Encluna’s performance was a standout as he claimed the top spot in both the novice and juniors categories for the Under 67.5 kg class. His incredible lift of 230 kg demonstrated his raw power and technique, making him one of the competition’s most promising talents.

Lian Rodriguez (Open)
In the highly competitive Under 75 kg open category, Lian Rodriguez delivered a stellar performance with a massive lift of 285 kg. His dominance in this class was undeniable, showcasing his exceptional strength and earning him the title of best lifter in the open division.

Greg Lim (Masters 1)
Greg Lim impressed in the Under 140 kg category, securing first place in both the novice and masters 1 divisions with a lift of 222.5 kg. His consistent performance across categories highlighted his experience and dedication to the sport.

Ricky Cheng (Masters 2)
In the masters 2 division, Ricky Cheng emerged victorious in the Under 75 kg class with a solid lift of 140 kg. His achievement underscored his determination and skill, making him a standout lifter in his category.

Renato Dio (Masters 3)
Renato Dio dominated the Under 82.5 kg masters 3 division with a lift of 170 kg. His performance demonstrated that age is no barrier to strength, earning him the title of best lifter in his division.

From the rising stars in the juniors division to the seasoned veterans in the masters categories, each athlete’s hard work and passion for the sport were evident. As the final lifts were completed and the awards were handed out, it was clear that the future of powerlifting in the Philippines is incredibly bright.
