1. How did you discover your passion for powerlifting, and what inspired you to pursue it as a competitive sport?
In 2018, I had the privilege of meeting Coach Bert Gayanes, the legendary gorilla of powerlifting. He recognized my potential and introduced me to the world of powerlifting. Prior to that, I was focused on strongman and weightlifting, as they shared the common goal of lifting heavy weights. Coach Gayanes’ expertise and coaching style had a profound impact on my development as an athlete, helping me refine my techniques and build strength.
2. Can you share some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a powerlifting athlete and how you overcame them?
During my competitions in 2019-2020, I noticed a discrepancy between my performance in training and on the competition platform. Despite feeling stronger during training, I struggled to reach my target numbers during competitions. Recognizing this, I made focused adjustments in my subsequent preparations. I became more meticulous in training, refining my techniques and optimizing performance. I also emphasized the importance of mental fortitude, reminding myself that the real test was on the platform. These changes helped bridge the gap between training and competition performance and taught me the value of resilience and focused preparation. Through ongoing improvement, I aimed to reach my goals and unlock my true potential.
3. How do you balance your training schedule with other commitments in your life, such as work or family?
It’s crucial to prioritize and make time for the things that matter to you. Despite having parental and spousal responsibilities, I ensure that I find a way to pursue my training. With two kids to take care of, I manage my mornings by accompanying one of them to school and later picking up my wife after work. It is during this window of time that I carve out for my training. Fortunately, working at a gym grants me the convenience of completing my program there. I am immensely grateful for my supportive family, who understand and encourage my dedication to sports, acknowledging the need for me to allocate time for training.
4. What is your training routine like? How do you structure your workouts to maximize your strength gains and performance?
I place unwavering trust in the program designed for me by my coach. I adhere to it faithfully, without making any modifications or deviating from the prescribed plan. This complete trust in my coach and their expertise allows me to fully commit to the program and maximize its benefits for my training.
5. Powerlifting consists of three main lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. Which lift do you find the most challenging, and how do you approach training to overcome those challenges?
In my case, squats have always been my most challenging lift. I often find myself comparing my performance to other powerlifters around the world, noting that individuals in lower weight classes can lift the same weight as me. However, I remain determined to optimize my squat lifts and continuously explore methods to improve.
To address this, I experiment with various adjustments in my stance, grip, execution, and movement during squats. I am constantly seeking what works best for me, focusing on techniques where I experience no pain or discomfort. These adjustments become an integral part of my training routine as I adapt and refine my approach.
6. Powerlifting often involves weight cutting for certain weight classes. What are some effective strategies you use to safely cut weight without compromising your strength and performance?
As an athlete, I maintain a consistent eating pattern outside of competition preparation. However, eight weeks before a competition, I fine-tune my diet to optimize performance. I employ strategies like water loading and adjusting carbohydrate or sodium intake to meet weight requirements. After weigh-in, I focus on replenishing nutrients through strategic refeeding to restore energy levels for peak performance on competition day.
7. Can you share some of your most memorable achievements or proudest moments in your powerlifting career?
The recent PHPL Metro Manila Open in 2023 marked a significant milestone in my powerlifting career. It was a defining moment as I shattered four national records in my weight class, showcasing my strength and ability. Additionally, I achieved the highest weight score in the entire country, further solidifying my position as a top competitor. This event undoubtedly stands out as a highlight in my journey as a powerlifter.
8. How did you feel going into the competition? Of course, I was excited and nervous. It was my first opportunity to compete abroad, and I saw my competitors, some of them from different parts of Asia. I told myself, “Wow, this is my chance to bring the Philippines up higher hahaha.”
You only got your opener of 350kg, and it was enough for a win. That’s mighty strong, bro. What was the thought process behind attempt selection? My initial plan was to open with 340kg and then make big jumps if it felt easy. But when I saw that most of my competitors were opening with around 330+, I thought I needed a higher opener to get ahead of them and disrupt their strategy. So, in the end, I stuck with the opener.
9. Knowing that deadlifts are your strongest point, what are your expectations going into this year’s Static Monsters Worldwide Rankings?
Last year, I competed in the under 90kg weight class and ranked 3rd in the world. This time, I want to be the best, especially since there will be Strongman Nationals this year, and I need to drop to under 80kg to defend my title. Hopefully, I can break world records in the qualifiers.
10. Are you willing to travel abroad to compete in Worlds? Yes, absolutely! As long as there’s an opportunity waiting for me, I’m all in. Who wouldn’t want to be a world-class athlete?
How is prep coming along for the Philippines Strongest Man? Any contenders you’re looking out for in your weight class? What are your predictions for the podium, coach? I think this is the best and most challenging year for me in the world of strongman sports. Since it took a while for this league to return, I focused on powerlifting, and it was a significant adjustment to suddenly lift unusual implements not commonly found in a regular gym. I have confidence in myself, so I believe I can give my best in the upcoming nationals. As for my contenders, many of them are the same, with a few new additions. But in strongman, the results are very unpredictable because it’s such a demanding sport. I hope, of course, to defend my title.
11. As a champion powerlifter, you are a role model for many. Can you share any future goals or aspirations you have in your powerlifting career?
My aspiration is to inspire and motivate individuals to participate in powerlifting, encouraging them to pursue their own athletic journeys. I strive to not only compete in international competitions but also serve as a role model and a source of inspiration for others. By sharing my own experiences and achievements, I aim to ignite a passion for powerlifting in others and empower them to push their boundaries and reach their full potential.
12. What advice would you give to aspiring powerlifters who are just starting their journey in the sport?
Maintaining consistency in your training is key. Prioritize injury prevention and ensure you take pleasure in what you do. Embrace the opportunity to participate in competitions without fear. Remember, the challenges you encounter in training are often more demanding than what you’ll face on competition day.
